ER tank in left wing

Fri, Dec 25th 2009

I finally got back into actual construction today. I started by removing the fuel tanks from both wings to allow access to the inboard most bay of the leading edges for installation of the extended range (auxillary) fuel tanks. Then I located where I was going to cut a hole in my leading edge bottom skin for an access/inspection panel, marked it out, drilled four big holes near the corners, and cut a big hole in my wing! After some time with my dremel and file, I had a hole that was just larger than the inspection plate that came with the ER tank kit. I clecoed the inspection plate to the reinforcing ring and used them to locate the rivet holes in the wing skin, drilled, deburred and then dimpled them. The last thing I did was trim two of the mounting ears on the far end of the tank to allow it to be bolted to the rib at the wingtip.
